ALEXANDER WELCOMES APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT LOCAL McDONALDS RESTAURANT

25-May-2012

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey MP Danny Alexander today (Friday) visited the McDonald's Restaurant in Inverness to meet apprentices; and hear about the company's apprenticeship programme.

McDonald's invest £43 million each year training staff across the UK. Launched in 2008, the company's apprenticeship programme has, to date, supported more than 12,000 staff to gain an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Hospitality.

Mr Alexander met trainees and staff who are taking part in the programme. He welcomed the company's apprenticeship programme and their approach to staff development.

Danny Alexander says:

"The progress McDonald's and the local team have made is impressive. They are working hard to promote good standards in training and development.

"It's essential that everyone, in the Highlands and across the UK, has the opportunity to develop new skills and pursue a worthwhile career. By introducing measures such as the Youth Contract programme, the Government is doing everything possible to ensure that businesses have the opportunity to take on and train new staff while giving employees the chance to progress."

"By creating new jobs and investing in apprenticeships, companies like McDonald's can play a significant part in the future of our economy while also helping to ensure that the country stays socially mobile."

Franchisee Craig Duncan said:

"It was a pleasure to meet Danny, and to talk to him about my business. In recent years, we have introduced many changes to both our menu and our restaurants, and I very much hope he enjoyed the tour of the re-imaged Inverness store.

With traditional lines between education and employment blurring, I am immensely proud of our training and development programme, which gives staff the opportunity to gain transferable, nationally-recognised qualifications. This is good for employees and good for the business – so it was great to show Danny first-hand the career progression we offer."
