Alexander welcomes dairy code of conduct

23-Jul-2012

Inverness, Nairn Badenoch & Strathspey MP Danny Alexander has welcomed news that farmers and dairy processors have agreed to an outline of a dairy industry Code of Practice on milk contracts today (23rd July) at the Royal Welsh show.

The finer details of the Code will now be finalised by all parties by the end of August with the intention that in future contracts between farmers and dairy processors will be properly negotiated, fairer and more transparent.

Mr Alexander, while attending the opening of the new ASDA superstore in Inverness today, met with local farmers and dairy producers to discuss their concerns.

Highland MP Danny Alexander says:

"This agreement between farmers and processors on an outline for a dairy code of practice is a breakthrough for dairy farmers here in the Highlands and across the UK.

"I am extremely pleased that an outline deal has been struck which will empower farmers and bring greater fairness to the dairy market.

"The UK Government will continue to work to ensure that, as the details of the agreement are hammered out over the summer, we get the right outcome for our local dairy farmers."
