New Year message to constituents from Danny Alexander

In his New Year message, Local MP Danny Alexander looks forward to 2012 and will continue to build a fairer and more sustainable economy for people living in the Highlands and across the UK. Alexander says:

"2011 was the year we lifted nearly a million low paid workers out of paying income tax altogether and cut taxes for 23m people.

21-Dec-2011 - Alexander welcomes sleeper cash commitment

Highland Lib Dem MP and Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander has welcomed Transport Scotland's commitment today to match £50million which was pledged by the UK Government to help renew the rolling stock for the Caledonian Sleeper.

In its Rail2014 consultation document on the next Scotrail franchise, the Scottish Government placed the future of the sleeper service in fresh doubt – as well as the daytime direct rail services from Inverness and Aberdeen to London.

19-Dec-2011 - Alexander welcomes Citizens Advice report on unfair delivery charges

Highland Lib Dem MP Danny Alexander has welcomed survey results published by Citizens Advice Bureaux in Scotland which reflect widespread unhappiness in rural Scotland with the delivery surcharges applied by some mail-order and online retailers.

Mr Alexander has highlighted the issue of unfair delivery charges in the past – and has helped persuade a number of companies, including Avon, Asda & BHS to stop applying surcharges to rural customers in the Highlands & Islands.

Responding to the publication of the Scottish Government's Infrastructure Investment Plan, Highland Lib Dem MP Danny Alexander said:

"This document represents a huge missed opportunity for the Highlands. It confirms that the SNP will do nothing to begin dualling the A9 in two full terms of office.

- Welcome for decision to reject January fuel duty hike

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey MP Danny Alexander says the Chancellor of the Exchequer's Autumn Statement today will help to build a fair foundation for the Highland economy to grow.

Mr Alexander welcomed a package of measures to support growth and help young unemployed people.

Highland MP Danny Alexander is urging the Scottish Government to seize the chance to end unwelcome speculation over the future of Caledonian Sleeper services between the Highlands and London.

As Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Mr Alexander has played a key role in securing an offer of £50million towards the replacement of the aging rolling stock which provides an overnight rail link from the Highlands, the North East, Edinburgh & Glasgow to the UK Capital.

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey MP Danny Alexander joined Merkinch Primary School on Friday to take part in a litter-pick with P2/3 pupils.

The children wrote to Mr Alexander to seek his support with their efforts to take better care of their playground and the park area next to the school.

7-Nov-2011 - Alexander welcomes Highland stops for Olympic torch relay

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey MP Danny Alexander has welcomed the announcement of a large number of Highland stops on the Olympic torch relay, ahead of the London Games next year.

Mr Alexander had written to Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport, asking for Highland communities to be included – and especially pushing for recognition of Badenoch & Strathspey's close links with Olympic sport.

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey MP Danny Alexander has urged the SNP to end half a decade of dodge and delay over vital Highland transport investments, as its conference gets underway in the Highland Capital.

Last month, Mr Alexander challenged the SNP to prioritise capital spending on transport which will do most to boost economic growth in all parts of the country.

18-Oct-2011 - Alexander welcomes 150m investment in rural mobile phone coverage

Local MP Danny Alexander has welcomed the announcement by the UK Government of a £150 million investment in providing greater mobile network coverage across rural areas.

The new mobile infrastructure development will enable rural users to access not only the 2G network, but 3G as well; and will provide a foundation for a future 4G upgrade.
